the kitchen calls...
i dunno what it is w/ computer nerds and being chefs! so i know of 2 or 3 ppl quitting their field to go to culinary school! but i have to admit, i'm having more fun cooking now, and especially grilling! i think i bbq'd for 3 or 4 weeks in a row!
anyways, i'm so proud of myself...i prolly cooked enough food this weekend to last me a week! i havent really used my kitchen since i moved in. first, i baked some brownies. then, i went to make real food. i started with this zuchinni and tomato dish i've pretty much got down. then i went on to experiment with some new stuff. i randomly picked up some mao gua at the asian store (a squash/melon-like veggie) and had it with chicken and those black dried mushrooms. it turned out surprisingly yummy!
a few weeks ago, i had this awesome coconuty green curry dish at a thai restaurant so i wanted to recreate it. that turned out yummy too =) it wasnt an exact replica, but i think i know what to do differently next time. so, all i have to do this week for dinner is steam up some more rice, and i'm all set! =)
i do have some cooked chicken set aside for this pita creation i wanted to try out...i didn't have time (or room in my tummy) to do that as well. oh, and i love fruit! i have peaches, cherries, and watermelon right now. yum!

The fascination geeks have with cooking is quite common. For most of us, it's the opportunity to do something with our heads and hands (which is why we picked engineering/science/programming) to begin with. Gourmet cooking, especially, requires fine motor skills to really polish a dish presentation. There is a large element of design as well. And for the hard scientists, cooking is all about chemistry.
I'm reading this book called Cookwise: The Hows and Whys of Successful Cooking. If you've ever watched Good Eats, it's basically the book form of the show, but in more of a textbook format. It's a great read for any geek chef.
